Diario 4 - ULatina San Pedro

El miércoles, fui a la ULatina San Pedro para una clase de aprender las suturas. Tenía un kit para practicar, y un doctor me enseñó y a los otros estudiantes. Ensayo mucho, y pienso que para una estudiante de comunicaciones, fue muy impresionante! Fue difícil el primer tiempo, pero con repetición el proceso fue más rápido. ¡Era una actividad tranquila también!

Mi impresión del programa a la Universidad Latina San Pedro, los enfermedades tropicales, y los protocolos para diagnóstico es que el sistema de salud y medicina de Costa Rica hace un mejor trabajo de proveer educación y tratamiento de todos la gente. Es menos dinero para la escuela premedia, las retas, y vacunas para enfermedades tropicales. En general, la prevención de los problemas de salud es más importante que el tratamiento porque el sistema de salud no es un negocio. Desafortunadamente, es muy económica en los Estados Unidos.

Overall, my experience the past two days has further proven my initial impression of the healthcare system in Costa Rica and the intrinsic differences in the belief system it is built off of. One experience that stood out to me specifically was during our injections practice, a major part of the interaction was patient focused - making sure that the individual was comfortable, gave consent for treatment, understood the procedure, and was relaxed. The “tranquillo” culture of the area translates into the delivery of healthcare as well, but without letting procedure or protocol slip. In the states, medicine is seen as a job that just happens to be on people, rarely centered around the emotions of the patient.

When it comes to my language skills, I am seeing more of an ability to a) use and remember basic phrases in everyday activities like ordering food or asking where something is and b) using my limited vocabulary to hold conversations about things I have not been taught to say but can figure out using what I can. My fear of using the language is beginning to ease - obviously not completely as the language is still very new to me, but I now see it as something I can functionally work on.
